Within SLU

Department of Philosophy

While enrolled in the College of Philosophy and Letters, students may begin graduate coursework toward an M.A. degree in philosophy. In their last year of studies, students officially transfer into the graduate program, which is housed in the College of Arts and Sciences.

Department of Theological Studies

By mutual arrangement between the Department of Theological Studies and the College of Philosophy and Letters, post-baccalaureate Jesuit students at SLU may take graduate courses in theology.

Catholic Studies Program

SLU’s Catholic Studies Program has supported the College of Philosophy and Letters by co-sponsoring the annual John F. Kavanaugh, S.J., Philosophy for Ministry Lecture beginning in 2014.

English as a Second Language

The dean of the College of Philosophy and Letters acts as a liaison between the INTO program and foreign Jesuits who seek to acquire basic English-language skills at SLU. This partnership began in 2015 with a Jesuit from the Dominican Republic and was initiated with the help of the dean of the Instituto Bonó, which administers the Jesuit First Studies program in Santo Domingo.

Other Departments

Over the years, students enrolled in the College of Philosophy and Letters have concomitantly pursued minors, second majors and master’s degrees in departments that include:

For post-baccalaureate students, graduate work toward a master’s degree is facilitated by agreements with the partnering departments that allow the student to begin on coursework before officially enrolling in the program. Per these agreements, students may remain in the College of Philosophy and Letters for up to two years before transferring to the graduate program.

External Partnerships

Kenrick-Glennon Seminary

The College of Philosophy and Letters has enjoyed a long partnership with the Kenrick-Glennon Seminary, operated by the Archdiocese of St. Louis. Beginning in Fall 2018, seminary collegians have pursued their B.A. in philosophy through the College of Philosophy and Letters, taking courses both at the SLU campus and at Kenrick-Glennon Seminary. Seminary pre-theologians who enter the seminary in need of undergraduate philosophy and theology requirements enroll as non-degree-seeking students in SLU’s College of Philosophy and Letters.

Aquinas Institute of Theology

By mutual arrangement between the Aquinas Institute of Theology and the College of Philosophy and Letters, post-baccalaureate Jesuit students at SLU take graduate courses in theology offered at the Institute of Theology.
