Assistantships
Saint Louis University's Trudy Busch Valentine School of Nursing offers graduate research assistantships as an option for full-time doctoral students on campus. There are both contractual requirements and school expectations for working with faculty members as research assistants.
Contractual Requirements
- Work 10-20 hours per week for assigned faculty during weeks that SLU is in session for the period of time defined in your contract.
- Take full-time coursework or actively engage in other academic work (e.g., dissertation) consistent with full-time student status.
- Refrain from full-time outside work for pay unless this has been approved in advance by your adviser, program director and the dean.
- Refer to the Graduate Education Manual for Assistants for further information.
School Expectations
- Students attend a mandatory orientation by Graduate Education before starting as an assistant.
- Doctoral assistants are expected to maintain acceptable grades required for progression in their program, and those working on their dissertation must maintain acceptable progress on their dissertation.
- Doctoral assistants are actively involved in acquiring research competencies through their work and through research events and activities at school, or conferences, webinars, etc. for development.
- Students are considered off on scheduled holidays and breaks. Helping outside the academic calendar is voluntary, such as helping complete a project, write a paper, etc.
- Doctoral students may be included as authors in publications or presentations of scholarly works with faculty, based on the scope of work on the project and meeting the ICJME requirements for authorship. Authorship plans should be negotiated when the student begins work on the project.
