NACCC Survey

The National Assessment of Campus Collegiate Climates (NACCC) is a national survey conducted by the Race and Equity Center at the University of Southern California. The survey measures campus racial climate for undergraduate students. SLU’s participation in fall 2020 helps to establish priorities for strategic action and a baseline against which future surveys may be compared.

The administration of the NACCC survey is sponsored by the Office of the President, the Office of Diversity and Innovative Community Engagement, and the Division of Student Development. A steering committee (comprised largely of a diverse group of SLU students) provides direction to ensure robust participation in the survey and will create recommendations for the University once the results are available in spring 2021. Questions about the NACCC may be directed to Bobby Wassel, Ph.D, or Richard Marks, Ed.D.

The NACCC survey was administered for SLU Oct. 29-Nov. 19, 2020.  To access the results report, please click the link below.

What is the NACCC?

The National Assessment of Campus Collegiate Climates is a national survey that seeks to measure campus racial climate. Unlike other surveys that may consider racial climate as one part of an overall climate survey, the NACCC’s sole focus is the “extent to which race matters on campus” (NACCC). You can learn more by consulting these general FAQs or reviewing the survey content areas. The NACCC website also provides background and development of the survey. The NACCC survey is administered by the Race and Equity Center at the University of Southern California.

Why is SLU conducting the NACCC?

SLU is committed to greater racial equity on campus. While we do not need a survey to tell us that we have work to do, we believe it is important to collect data that can help demonstrate patterns, illuminate systemic issues that inform the lived experiences of students, and make the case for strategic investments to improve racial climate on campus. Survey results also will serve as a baseline against which we can measure progress when conducting the survey again in the future.

What will happen with the NACCC results?

When the results are available in spring 2021, the steering committee will reconvene to review the data and to make recommendations to University leadership for concrete actions that can improve campus racial climate for undergraduate students. Key themes and results from the survey will also be shared with our campus community on this web page. Additionally, the results will be benchmarked with other institutions nationwide who are participating in the NACCC this semester.

Who is on the NACCC Steering Committee?

The Steering Committee is co-led by Taylor Stalling (College of Arts and Sciences, class of 2023), Richard Marks, Ph.D., (Director, Cross Cultural Center for Global Citizenship), and Bobby Wassel, Ph.D., (Assistant Director, Center for Social Action).
