Dr. William J. Burke received his medical degree and doctoral degree in biochemistry from the School of Medicine at Saint Louis University in 1972. He also completed his neurology residency at Saint Louis University in 1976. He became a fellow of the American Academy of Neurology in 1994.

Dr. Burke's research focuses on the mechanism of degeneration of epinephrine neurons in Alzheimer's disease and regulation of catecholamine synthesizing enzymes. In the course of his activities, Dr. Burke was instrumental in establishing a brain bank for the study of Alzheimer's disease. The brain bank serves as a resource for biochemical and pathologic studies. Throughout his career, Dr. Burke has maintained grant funding for his investigations from the Veterans Affairs Administration and the National Institute of Aging.
