Souers Stroke Institute

The Souers Stroke Institute offers significant advantages for patients with acute stroke and stroke related disorders. We have developed specific stroke protocols in the emergency room to identify appropriate medication or surgical intervention. In addition, patients with any of the risk factors described on the opposite panel can benefit from an Institute evaluation and appropriate stroke prevention recommendations.

The Code Stroke Team is activated when a patient exhibiting symptoms of stroke is referred to SLUCare. This multidisciplinary team of physicians with expertise in critical care of strokes, stroke neurology and stroke rehabilitation, is supported by consulting medical and surgical teams of cardiologists, neurosurgeons, vascular surgeons, neuroradiologists, emergency medical specialists, nurse specialists and technicians.

During the first critical hours, inpatients admitted to the dedicated Acute Stroke Care Unit with monitored beds may undergo continuous transcranial Doppler monitoring, in addition to continuous cardiac and hemodynamic monitoring. The most appropriate method of treatment is developed using critical information about the vascular disturbance from state-of-the-art neuroimaging equipment such as MRI, MRA, TCD and angiography. The heart is also thoroughly evaluated with tools such as transthoracic echocardiography (TTE) and transesophageal echocardiography (TEE).

Neuroradiologists highly-trained for diagnostic and interventional procedures, as well as vascular and neurosurgeons for any necessary surgical intervention, are available 24 hours a day, seven days a week to help develop and implement the designated treatment program for each patient. A neurointensivist from the Neurointensive Critical Care Unit provides special care for patients with neurological and neurosurgical disorders. Once the patient's condition has been stabilized, the stroke team meets daily to further evaluate the diagnosis, management, rehabilitation and prognosis. Nurse specialists, trained in stroke management, provide assistance for stroke patients and their loved ones through the entire process of stroke recovery.

The Souers Stroke Institute at SLUCare offers a comprehensive rehabilitation service for patients and families. Through our PremierCare Neurorehabilitation Unit, individually designed therapies are implemented to maximize the patient's recovery in cooperation with the patient's referring physician. Depending on the patient's need, physical, occupational and speech therapy, as well as vocational and family counseling services are available.

After discharge from SSM Health Saint Louis University Hospital, follow-up for the patient is provided at the Stroke Outpatient Clinic. The stroke team works in close consultation with referring physicians to ensure continued recovery.
